Degree of hearing loss
There is a range of hearing form normail to complete deafness. Between these two extremes there are different degrees of hearing loss: mild, moderate, severe and profound.
If you are suffering from a mild hearing loss you are unable to hear soft sounds and you have difficulties following and hearing speech in noisy environments.
If you have a moderate hearing loss you are unable to hear soft sounds and moderately loud sounds. Understanding speech, particularly with background noise is difficult.
If you suffer from severe hearing loss you are able to hear some audible sounds, but communication without a hearing instrument is very difficult.
Suffering from profound loss of hearing, means you are only able to hear extremely loud sounds and communication without a hearing instrument is impossible.
