Accepting that your child has a hearing loss
Once you have discovered that your child has a hearing loss, a lot of effort and interest has to be taken in correcting the problem.
Where the nature of the hearing loss is permanent nerve damage, of severe to profound degree, the situation is distressing. In the beginning many feel helpless and it might be difficult to accept what the doctor is saying. You might feel it hard to accept that this could happen to your child. This is a perfectly natural reaction and it can take some time to accept the situation, as perfectly understandable concerns like “Will my child be able to speak? Will my child make friends with other children? Will my child grow up normally, get an education and a job?” will appear in your mind.
As you get used to the thought of having a child with a hearing loss, you will also be able to put more effort into the family’s everyday life and assist the child overcome the hearing loss. The solution may lie in the use of hearing aids, and your doctor will advise you on this.
