Speech Audiometry
Speech audiometry is the standard test for determining your ability to understand speech clearly.
A speech audiogram is performed on older children and adults, but is unsuitable for infants and young children.
This test requires that the patient be able to respond to speech by repeating words spoken to them. Special lists of words are used and these may be monosyllabic or spondaic words.
The test is performed in a soundproof room. The sound is transmitted to the patient by headphones. The percentage of repeated words at a given volume is plotted on a graph known as a speech audiogram.
With a normal hearing a normal speech audiogram result will be obtained. With hearing loss the speech audiogram will reflect the degree of speech discrimination impairment.
The results are obtained within an hour and are interpreted by the doctor.
